Thomas Markle, the father of the Duchess of Sussex, was arrested in Florida on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material, the US Department of Justice announced on Friday. The 82-year-old has also been charged on that count and was expected to appear in court in Tampa the same day, according to Reuters.

Why it matters

The case places a member of the British royal family's extended circle at the centre of a serious federal criminal prosecution in the United States. Meghan Markle, who is married to Prince Harry, said in late October that she was "shaken" when the allegations first became public. The arrest also draws in the FBI, which a Justice Department source said took part in carrying out the arrest, and it follows a separate investigation on the other side of the world.

Prosecutor pledges full enforcement of federal law

Bill Essayli, a deputy federal prosecutor, described the accusations in remarks carried by Reuters. He said Markle is accused of having held material showing sexual abuse of children, including photographs in which Markle himself appears alongside underage girls.

"The allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr Markle with the full force of federal law," Essayli said, according to the news agency.

The Daily Mail, which was first to report the arrest, said Markle was taken into custody at the senior living residence where he lives in Lakeland, a city in Florida east of Tampa.

Laptop under examination in the Philippines

The arrest follows disclosures about a separate police inquiry in the Philippines. Filipino police recently said they were examining a laptop found together with images of child abuse at a residence described as Markle's former home. Dagens Nyheter reports that development alongside Friday's announcement from Washington.

The two strands — the federal case in Florida and the Philippine examination of the laptop — have not been publicly linked by authorities in the reporting available so far.

A long estrangement

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry married in 2018, the same year, according to Dagens Nyheter, that she cut contact with her father. The couple's two children have never met their maternal grandfather.

The duchess's brief public comment in late October — that she was shaken by the allegations — remains her only known reaction. She and Prince Harry have not issued further statements reported in the source material.

What to watch

Markle's scheduled court appearance in Tampa is the next formal step, and further details of the federal charge are likely to emerge from that proceeding. Watch also for any word from Filipino authorities on what their examination of the laptop establishes, and for any statement from the Sussexes beyond the duchess's earlier remark.
