Manchester United were held to a draw at Old Trafford on Saturday after Dominic Solanke scored in stoppage time to earn Tottenham a point, according to NRK. The result leaves Michael Carrick's side without a second league win of the season and keeps Tottenham without a victory after six Premier League rounds.

Bryan Mbeumo had put United ahead in the 73rd minute, breaking a deadlock that had lasted most of the match. The goal triggered wild celebrations among the home support but also a spell of disorder that produced a flurry of cards.

Why it matters

The dropped points deepen the pressure on Carrick, whose only league win this season came against Ipswich on 30 August. United sit 12th with six points, while Tottenham remain in the relegation zone. For a club of United's stature, the table makes uncomfortable reading barely two months into the campaign, and the post-match analysis from former players and pundits focused less on the scoreline than on the underlying problems.

A chaotic sequence after the opening goal

The match had been goalless for more than an hour before Mbeumo struck. What followed was, in the words of several observers, a loss of composure on both sides.

Luke Shaw reacted to a challenge from Rodrigo Bentancur and went towards the Tottenham player, who responded by pressing his head against Shaw's. Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, described Bentancur's involvement as an act of pure madness and said the lack of discipline at that stage of the game was the last thing Tottenham's coach, Roberto De Zerbi, needed. Neville added that Bentancur leaned into Shaw and called it sheer foolishness, noting that players often wonder afterwards why they put themselves in such positions.

Tottenham had been the better side for long stretches, particularly in the first half, when they created seven goalscoring chances to United's one. Neville said on Sky Sports that he was not entirely sure how United had taken the lead given the balance of play, though he acknowledged they had done so. He later concluded that Tottenham could not be said to have been undeserving of their equaliser.

Pundits question United's direction

The criticism after the final whistle was blunt and came from several quarters.

Jamie Redknapp, working alongside Neville, said that when he looked at the current United team and squad he struggled to picture a side capable of performing consistently week after week. In his assessment, they are simply not strong enough.

Chris Waddle, a former Tottenham player, told the BBC that Tottenham had played very well and that United face an enormous task. He said the team has lost its confidence and must rebuild it gradually, piece by piece.

Danny Murphy, another former player, also spoke to the BBC and pointed to structural issues. He said United need to settle on a system and find the right players to make them harder to play against, warning that without that, winning matches will become extremely difficult.

Waddle was equally critical of the goal United conceded, calling it a dreadful one to give away when playing with a one-man advantage and describing the defending as terrible.

Carrick points to game management

Carrick offered his own reading of events in comments to Sky Sports. He said his team make things harder for themselves and stressed the need to defend better across the full match, adding that they must be more stubborn and more ruthless at the end of games.

Those remarks point to a pattern rather than a single incident: United's inability to close out matches has now cost them points they appeared to have secured.

Context beyond the pitch

The fixture also carried an edge in the stands. United supporters directed taunts at their Manchester City counterparts following the ruling that City committed 114 breaches of Premier League rules, according to NRK. City intend to appeal, and no sanction has been decided, though there has been speculation that forced relegation could be one possible outcome.

Tottenham's fans, with their club currently below the relegation line, responded by hinting at the prospect of dropping down alongside City. It was a pointed exchange between two sets of supporters whose seasons have started far below expectations.

For Tottenham, the draw offers a measure of relief after a match in which they squandered chances, but it does not lift them out of the bottom three. For United, a point at home against a side in the relegation zone does little to quiet the questions being asked about the team's direction under Carrick.

The coming weeks will show whether either side can turn performances into results. United's next fixtures will be scrutinised closely for signs that Carrick can address the late-game frailties his own comments acknowledged, while Tottenham will look to convert the attacking output they showed at Old Trafford into a first league win of the season.
