Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told a campaign rally in Seville that his government would preserve and strengthen its housing decrees, according to EL PAÍS. The event forms part of campaigning ahead of Spain's general election on 29 November.
Sánchez said the housing measures shield tenants from speculation, El Español reports. According to Cadena SER, he also said housing policy should not be allowed to lapse, and tied the cause to an 87-year-old woman who died after being evicted.
El Mundo reports that Sánchez called for social mobilisation around the woman, referred to as Mari Carmen, urging voters to deliver a result at the polls favouring what he described as progressive majorities. El Confidencial reports that he accused the PP and Vox of discouraging turnout, saying they fear losing.
The rally is one of several stops as parties compete for support before the November vote. Housing has become a central theme of the campaign, with the prime minister presenting his government's decrees as protections for renters.
The election is set for 29 November. How the competing parties frame housing policy in the remaining weeks of the campaign will be a key indicator of where voter attention is focused.
