The LaLiga fixture between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club was suspended on Saturday after supporters threw paper planes and small rubber balls onto the pitch at the Estadio de Vallecas, according to DAZN. Referee José María Sánchez Martínez halted play so the objects could be cleared, but the throwing resumed after the restart, prompting a second stoppage. Players from both sides left for the dressing rooms and the match was called off.

The disruption was the centrepiece of an organised demonstration against club president Raúl Martín Presa, whose relationship with large sections of the Rayo support has broken down over recent months. DAZN reports that the protest turned the club's return to its own stadium into one of the most striking images of the football weekend.

Why it matters

The suspension puts Vallecas in the spotlight beyond Spain. Diario AS reports that the stadium could be closed for between one and three matches as a result of the disturbances, a sanction that would strip Rayo of home advantage in the coming weeks.

It also hardens a conflict that has been building since the summer. The Comunidad de Madrid began proceedings to terminate the club's concession on the ground after identifying problems with safety, sanitation and upkeep, DAZN reports. That process forced Rayo to play its opening home fixtures of the season at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque in Leganés.

Rayo regained use of Vallecas in September, but the return did not quiet the opposition to Martín Presa. Supporters have kept up their criticism and their calls for him to step down, including chants of "Presa, vete ya" and other demonstrations aimed at the board, according to DAZN.

A protest planned before kick-off

The action on Saturday was not spontaneous. According to DAZN, supporters intended from the start to whistle at the directors' box in the first minute and then, in the 13th minute, to wave scarves and sing against the board.

The paper planes were made from leaflets handed out in the stands, and the same leaflets carried a written statement setting out the organisers' case. DAZN reports that the text urged fans to keep up the pressure on Martín Presa even though the team was back at Vallecas. It argued that he had lost support across public and sporting institutions and that the return to the stadium should not be treated as a truce.

The document also laid out the sequence of actions for the match and closed with the phrase "Salvemos al Rayo" — "Let's save Rayo" — as the summary of what the organisers want to achieve, per DAZN.

A season shaped by the stadium dispute

The wider backdrop is the condition of Vallecas itself. The regional government's move to end the club's concession followed findings of safety, hygiene and maintenance deficiencies, and it pushed Rayo into a temporary exile at Butarque in Leganés. The team's first home games of the campaign were played there.

Although the club was able to return to its own ground in September, the underlying dispute over how Rayo is run has not eased. Saturday's events show how easily that tension can spill from the stands onto the field. Coverage from El Mundo, MARCA and El Correo also focused on the stoppage, with El Correo highlighting a gesture from the Rayo coach towards Terzic while the referee explained the reasons for the suspension.

For LaLiga, the immediate question is disciplinary. A closure of Vallecas for one to three matches, as Diario AS reports is possible, would follow Rayo into its next home fixtures and deepen a season already overshadowed by the conflict between the president and the club's supporters.

What happens next depends on the referee's report and the competition's disciplinary process, and on whether the organised protests continue once Rayo are allowed to play at home again.
