Portugal's Minister of Finance presented the draft state budget for 2027 to the Assembly of the Republic on Thursday, RTP reported. The delivery of the proposal opens the parliamentary stage of the budget process.

According to RTP, the plan projects the unemployment rate falling to 5.8% this year and to 5.7% in 2027.

Public debt stands out among the figures in the budget, Jornal de Negócios reported.

Diário de Notícias reported that the closing of the PRR, Portugal's recovery and resilience plan, pushes European investment in schools down to 1.3% of GDP, with those works shifted to the PT2030 framework.

The budget also sets out measures on the environment and infrastructure. Observador reported it includes works on beaches, climate shelters in cities, and new interventions against flooding and drought.

The government's proposal now goes to lawmakers, who will debate and vote on it in the coming weeks.

What to watch next: how parliament amends the draft, particularly on debt, education investment and the climate-related works.
