Police in Norway's Sør-Øst district say a serious accident involving two cars occurred on the E18 at Bommestad in Larvik on Thursday morning, leaving traffic at a standstill at the scene. The force announced the collision at 06:27, according to Telemarksavisa.

The crash took place on the stretch between exit 45, Bommestadkrysset, and exit 44, Ringdalkrysset, in the direction of Sandefjord. The police operations leader said the road is expected to remain closed in the northbound direction for several hours.

Operations leader Espen Reite of the Sør-Øst police district told Telemarksavisa that life-saving first aid is being given at the site. He said the sequence of events leading to the collision is not yet known.

Police forensic technicians and the accident investigation team from Statens Vegvesen, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, were reported to be on their way to the location.

Why it matters

The E18 is one of the main arteries linking Norway's south-eastern region with Oslo, and a closure at Bommestad falls on a heavily used stretch near Larvik. A shutdown lasting several hours in the northbound direction affects commuters, freight and emergency access along the corridor, and it comes at the start of a weekday morning when traffic volumes build quickly.

The involvement of both police forensic specialists and the roads administration's accident group signals that the case is being treated as a serious incident rather than a routine fender-bender. Their presence at the scene is standard practice when investigators need to establish how a collision unfolded and whether road conditions, vehicle behaviour or other factors played a part.

What is known so far

The confirmed facts remain limited. Two vehicles were involved. The collision happened between the two exits named by police, on the northbound side heading toward Sandefjord. The alarm was raised shortly after 6:20 a.m., and by 06:27 police had publicly confirmed a serious accident.

Beyond that, authorities have released little. Reite said the course of events has not been established, and no information has been given about the number of people involved, their condition, or the severity of any injuries. The statement that life-saving first aid is under way indicates that at least one person required urgent medical attention, but police have not elaborated.

The operations leader's warning that the closure could last several hours reflects the practical reality of a serious collision scene: investigators need time to document the position of vehicles, take measurements and gather evidence before the road can be cleared and reopened safely.

Traffic and travel impact

Drivers heading north from the Larvik area toward Sandefjord and onward were facing stationary traffic at the scene, with the carriageway closed. Telemarksavisa's report described the traffic as stillestående — at a standstill — at the location.

For motorists, the immediate consequence is delay and the need to consider alternative routes or postpone travel. Police have not issued detailed diversion guidance in the information released so far, and the duration of the closure remains an estimate rather than a fixed timetable.

The disruption also has a knock-on dimension: the E18 carries a mix of local commuter traffic and longer-distance journeys, so a blockage at Bommestad can ripple outward along connecting roads as drivers seek ways around the closure.

Investigation under way

Two separate strands of work are now converging on the site. Police forensic technicians will handle the criminal-investigation side of the scene, while Statens Vegvesen's accident team brings the roads authority's expertise to the examination of what happened.

Norwegian police routinely deploy both resources after serious crashes on major roads, and their arrival typically precedes any decision on when the carriageway can reopen. Until that work is complete, the northbound lane is likely to stay shut.

The absence of a confirmed sequence of events means it is too early to say whether any factor — speed, road surface, weather or driver behaviour — contributed to the collision. Police have not speculated publicly, and Reite's comments were confined to confirming that the cause is not yet known.

What to watch

The next developments will be police updates on the condition of those involved, a revised estimate for when the northbound carriageway can reopen, and any preliminary findings from the forensic and roads-authority teams at Bommestad.
