The 2026 Nanjing International Fashion Week opened on the evening of October 15 with a gala staged on the Nanjing Eye pedestrian bridge, according to 紫牛新闻. A second segment followed the next day and brought the opening celebrations to a close that evening. The event placed professional runway shows inside public city space, with the Hexi central business district lit up behind the bridge.
The opening gala was billed as a night of riverside reading and city culture under the banner "Star of the Literary Capital, Radiant Jianye," 紫牛新闻 reported. The program then moves into a retail phase: on October 17 and 18, a satellite venue at the Sandship Outlet in Nanjing's Jiangbei New Area will run a "show and buy" model, taking runway looks straight into shopping settings.
Why it matters
The format puts the week's fashion in front of the general public rather than an invitation-only audience. By using the bridge and the riverfront as a stage, organizers framed the whole city as the venue, a concept the event described as "the city is the runway." The show-and-buy sessions extend that idea into commerce, letting shoppers act on what they see on the catwalk.
The week also runs an official livestream, branded "Fashion Selects," which has featured five product categories so far: shopping complex perks, drinking water, kitchen appliances, wine and womenswear. Organizers say the channel links online promotion with in-person experience, so the event reaches everyday spending rather than stopping at the runway.
Four themes across two days
According to the organizers, the opening gala used its two days to cover four strands: brands, new talent, the city and honor. Each segment stood on its own while feeding into a single arc — design that returns to people, people who reflect the city, and a city that lends the event its prestige.
The first label on the schedule was JIFENG, showing its new autumn/winter 2026 collection under the theme "Quality in Deep Winter." Tall male models in sharply cut looks drew cheers from the audience, with shouts of praise and a flurry of phone cameras as guests posted the moment to social platforms. 紫牛新闻 reported that the reaction carried a note of civic pride in Nanjing's fashion ambitions.
Fashion's reach across ages was on display too. One mother, surnamed Wei, told the outlet that her 15-month-old daughter Yutong had come to watch her five-year-old brother walk the runway. The toddler picks her own outfits every morning, Wei said, and she called the fashion week "very good, very great," adding that her son's appearance was a chance for him to present himself.
The afternoon's headline segment was the launch of the 2026 Fashion City Miss pageant, which will judge entrants on urban character and contemporary style, with further rounds to follow. The day closed with the Super Deer Squad × DMS Glory Awards, a segment built around the idea that health is the best fashion — a departure from conventional runway presentations that organizers said gave the week a broader character.
Music over the water
The bridge setting carried over into the performances. A singer identified as Youde Xiang performed at the Nanjing Eye show with the sky and river as backdrop, according to 搜狐网. Soprano Shen Yuechi also appeared, telling the outlet that singing outdoors with the river breeze behind her felt natural, and that vocal music is itself a form of fashion.
Other coverage from the week included a video of a robot recommending the fashion week to young children, 搜狐网 reported.
What to watch
The show-and-buy sessions at the Jiangbei outlet run October 17-18. The week then closes on November 1-2 with a ceremony at the Zhonghua Gate barbican, pairing contemporary style with the Ming dynasty city wall. Organizers describe the full program as a thread running through Nanjing's landmarks, from the riverside bridge to the old ramparts.
