A man has died and two others were injured in a stabbing at an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre in Tralee, Co Kerry, according to The Irish Times. Gardaí arrested a man at the scene in connection with the incident, which happened at Ballymullen Barracks at around 5.20am on Saturday.
Gardaí and emergency services were called to the centre after reports of a disturbance. On arrival they found a man who had been seriously wounded; he was pronounced dead a short time later.
A second man, aged in his 40s, was taken to University Hospital Kerry with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. A third man was also hurt in the incident, The Irish Times reports.
The man arrested at the scene is in his late 40s. He is being held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in Co Kerry.
According to The Irish Times, the man who died, the injured men and the man in custody are all understood to be Somali nationals. The Irish Times also reports that gardaí have begun taking statements from a number of other men who were at the property when a row broke out and the stabbings occurred.
Why it matters
The death turns attention on Ballymullen Barracks, a former army site that the Department of Integration has used since May 2024 to accommodate people seeking international protection. The centre is licensed to house up to 50 single male applicants under a one-year agreement with the Department of Defence.
The case also puts a spotlight on how security and safety are managed at State-contracted accommodation for asylum seekers, and on how quickly gardaí can establish what happened inside a shared residential setting in the early hours of a weekend morning.
Investigation under way
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified, and the Garda Technical Bureau has been asked to attend. The scene is being preserved for forensic and technical examination, and a postmortem is to be arranged.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed, and an incident room is being set up at Tralee Garda station.
Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information that could help the investigation to contact Tralee Garda station.
The Department of Integration has not commented in the reporting summarised here, and no further details about the circumstances of the row have been made public.
What to watch
The results of the postmortem and the outcome of questioning of the man in custody are likely to shape the direction of the inquiry in the coming days.
