A gunman opened fire from a car on passers-by in the centre of Kraków on Saturday, killing six people and wounding 16 others, according to Wiadomości Onet. The dead include four women and two men.
Two police officers were among the injured. Both are in a serious condition and have undergone surgery, the national police commander, Gen. Marek Boroń, said shortly before 10 p.m., as reported by Wiadomości Onet.
Why it matters
The attack struck the Rynek Główny, the main square of one of Poland's largest and most visited cities, on a Saturday. The casualty count makes it one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in the country in recent years.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at an emergency meeting of the services that there were probably dead people in the attacker's home, adding that this would be confirmed. Wiadomości Onet reports that Tusk made the remark during a special briefing.
What is known about the attacker
Polish outlets have begun reporting details about the suspect. Fakt identifies him as a 24-year-old man, Michał O., citing investigators. Wiadomości Onet has not independently confirmed the identification.
An expert on weapons from GROM, Poland's special forces unit, told Wiadomości Onet that the attacker appeared to have been professionally prepared, and noted that training of this kind is also available in Poland.
Interia Wydarzenia reported that a crisis staff was in session as new information emerged about the attack on the square.
What happens next
The condition of the two wounded officers and the investigation into the attacker's home are the key threads to watch, along with confirmation of the prime minister's statement about further victims.
