The 2026 Buick LPGA Championship will be played Oct. 15–18 at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, organizers announced at a press conference held at the venue on Oct. 13. The tournament has drawn 81 players representing 17 countries and regions, a field that includes defending champion Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand and Chinese star Yin Ruoning, according to 中国新闻网.

This marks the first time the event has been staged at Sheshan, 中国新闻网 reports. The competition is jointly organized by the China Golf Association, the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau and the Songjiang District government, and is co-sanctioned by the LPGA and the China Ladies Professional Golf Association (CLPGA).

Why it matters

The tournament occupies a significant place on the LPGA's worldwide schedule, but its importance extends beyond the week's leaderboard. 中国新闻网 reports that LPGA Asia-Pacific managing director Chris Madsen described the event as part of the tour's effort to grow women's golf across Asia and China in particular, saying the shared aim is to draw more young people into the sport and show women the opportunities that athletics can open up.

For Chinese golf, the event also serves as a rare chance for domestic players to test themselves against international competition without leaving the country. China Golf Association secretary-general Wei Qingfeng said the tournament gives Chinese players a long-term, stable and professional international platform, and that competing at home against top-level fields helps them build big-event experience — work he linked directly to national team preparation for the Olympic and Asian Games, per 中国新闻网.

A field built around a defending champion and a home favorite

Thitikul arrives in Shanghai as the player to beat. 中国新闻网 reports she has won four times this season, bringing her LPGA career total to 11 titles, and she sits at No. 2 in the world ranking. She will begin her title defense at Sheshan.

Speaking about the week ahead, Thitikul said she enjoys visiting China and its food, and joked that her first goal for the week is to sample as many Chinese dishes as possible. She added that she is also looking forward to performing well during the LPGA's autumn Asian swing, according to 中国新闻网.

Yin, meanwhile, comes in on strong form this season. She said she looks forward to playing well in front of home fans whenever she returns to Shanghai. After two days of practice rounds at Sheshan, she described the course as genuinely demanding: many par-four holes play long, and the small greens make the approach shot strategy especially important, 中国新闻网 reports.

The CLPGA's role as a pathway

The co-sanctioning arrangement puts the CLPGA alongside the LPGA for the week, and CLPGA chairman Pan Zhongguang used the press conference to frame the domestic tour's purpose. He said the CLPGA's value lies in functioning as a pathway — a development ground for Chinese players and a route to higher-level competition for international players alike. He pointed to the arc from unknown faces at junior qualifying events to elite players such as Yin competing on the world stage, and said that progress at each stage depends on a stable, professional domestic tournament system. Chinese players start here and international players set out from here, he said, describing that openness as central to the tour's credibility and international reach, according to 中国新闻网.

What to watch

Four rounds at Sheshan will decide the title, with Thitikul chasing a repeat and Yin aiming to convert home-course knowledge into a result. The tournament begins Oct. 15 and concludes Oct. 18.
