The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Sunday, November 1, that more than 300,000 people have been displaced in Yemen, according to 央广网. Many of those uprooted left their homes only in recent months, driven out by the war and by rising food prices.

央广网 reports that displaced families are struggling to find shelter and cannot afford basic goods, while aid agencies face a funding shortfall. The IOM said it has already received requests for help from people in need.

The organization has teams working in four Yemeni governorates, where it says it can provide medical consultations to about 1,000 people. It estimates it will need $45 million over the next six months to supply shelter and other assistance, including health and water services, 央广网 reports.

The IOM again urged the parties to the conflict to work toward peace so that humanitarian workers can deliver relief safely and without obstruction, according to 央广网.

The figures offer only a partial picture of a displacement crisis that has deepened as fighting continues and household budgets shrink. With needs outpacing funding, aid groups warn that shelter and medical support could reach fewer families than required.

What to watch next: whether donors respond to the IOM's six-month funding appeal, and whether improved access allows relief to reach the newly displaced.
