A man drove a car into a square in central Krakow on Saturday and fired at passers-by from inside the vehicle, according to dメニューニュース. Five people were killed and 15 were injured, two of them police officers, the outlet reported.

The suspect, a Polish national wearing clothing that resembled a military uniform, exchanged gunfire with officers and was wounded before being taken into custody. He was then brought to a hospital for treatment, dメニューニュース reports. Police have not stated a motive.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the attack as a tragic shooting in a post on X and said authorities are determined to establish the full circumstances, according to dメニューニュース.

The shooting took place in the Main Market Square of the old town, an area known for St. Mary's Church that draws large numbers of visitors. Krakow also serves as a base for people traveling to the site of the former Nazi German Auschwitz concentration camp in Oświęcim, south of the city.

Some outlets gave differing initial casualty figures as the situation developed, with other Japanese broadcasters reporting six dead and more than ten wounded.

Details on the suspect's background, the sequence of the attack and the condition of those hurt remain limited. Further information is expected as Polish police and prosecutors continue their investigation.
