Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 on Monday, handing the Sky Blues their first Premier League home victory in 25 years and lifting them out of the relegation zone, according to BBC and Sky Sports.

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle gave his reaction to BBC Sport after the match, describing the result as a heavy price paid in a demanding division.

"That's hard. That's punishment in this league," Jaissle told BBC Sport. "We controlled many phases but it's not enough."

The Newcastle boss said his team had spells of control during the game but could not turn them into a result. "The momentum was there," he said. "We have a young squad but that shouldn't be an excuse. It was a tough game in general."

Jaissle also pointed to returning players as a positive, saying the injured members of his squad are hopefully getting more game minutes. Looking at the match as a whole, he said it was not the worst performance, and he apologised to supporters.

"I apologise to fans because they deserved a different result," he told BBC Sport.

Why it matters

The scoreline carries weight beyond one match. BBC reported that the win was Coventry's first Premier League home game victory in 25 years, while Sky Sports noted the result moved the Sky Blues out of the relegation zone and gave them their first home win of the season.

For Newcastle, the defeat extends a troubling defensive run. According to BBC, Newcastle have now conceded four or more goals in back-to-back Premier League away games for the first time since December 2012, when they lost 4-3 to Manchester United and 7-3 to Arsenal.

BBC also reported that Newcastle have conceded the joint-most penalty goals in the Premier League since the start of last season, with seven, level with Burnley. Overall, only Tottenham have conceded more spot-kick goals in the competition than Newcastle's 117, according to the same BBC report.

Rudoni's penalty ends a long wait

Jack Rudoni scored from the penalty spot, a goal that LiveScore described as ending Coventry City's 25-year wait for a Premier League home goal against Newcastle.

The penalty also fed into Newcastle's wider problem with conceding from spot kicks. BBC's figure of seven penalty goals conceded since the start of last season places Newcastle level with Burnley at the top of that particular table.

Goal.com reported that Newcastle defender Sven Botman scored a brilliant goal, but the outlet also said Newcastle embarrassed themselves badly in the match.

Jaissle gives early update on Toure injury

Jaissle was asked about the condition of Bazoumana Toure, who picked up an injury during the game. The manager said it was too soon to offer a firm assessment.

"Let's see. It's too early to say anything. Hopefully it's nothing serious," Jaissle told BBC Sport.

The injury adds to Newcastle's list of concerns, though Jaissle said the players who have been sidelined are hopefully getting more minutes as they work back toward full fitness.

A difficult away record takes shape

The back-to-back away collapses echo a period more than a decade ago, when Newcastle shipped four or more goals on consecutive road trips in December 2012. BBC's comparison to that sequence underlines how unusual the current run is for the club.

The penalty statistics add another layer. Conceding seven spot-kick goals since the start of last season, level with Burnley, and 117 overall in the competition, behind only Tottenham, points to a persistent issue rather than a one-off.

Jaissle did not dispute the difficulty of the evening. He framed the performance as one with positive passages, but acknowledged that controlling phases of a match is not the same as winning it.

"That's hard. That's punishment in this league," he said.

What to watch next

Newcastle will look for a response in their next fixture and await clarity on Toure's injury, while Coventry will try to build on a result that BBC and Sky Sports both framed as a landmark for the club.
