Danish authorities closed off the area around the United States embassy in Copenhagen on Friday after drones were reported over the city, according to RaiNews. The alert came as NATO's Military Committee was holding a meeting in the Danish capital.

The restricted zone near the US embassy was put in place the same day the alliance's top military body convened, RaiNews reports. The committee is expected to vote on a successor to Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, according to ANSA. Additional Italian outlets, including Il Messaggero and the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, also reported the drone activity and the closure around the US embassy.

The drone reports drew a response from French President Emmanuel Macron, who said a plan is needed to shield infrastructure from hybrid attacks attributed to Russia, Il Messaggero reports. The meeting of the NATO Military Committee had been scheduled for Saturday, according to the Giornale di Sicilia.

Danish police have not released further details on the drones or their origin in the reporting available so far. No injuries or damage have been reported.

What to watch next: whether Danish authorities identify the source of the drones and whether the NATO Military Committee proceeds with its planned vote on the next chair of the alliance's highest military body.
