Marco Bezzecchi won the MotoGP Indonesian Grand Prix at the Mandalika circuit on Sunday, a result that gave Italian riders their 300th victory in the premier class of the world championship, according to RTVE.es. Aprilia filled the top four places in a race the Spanish broadcaster described as dominated by the manufacturer.
Jorge Martín finished third and moved back to the top of the riders' standings, two points clear of Marc Márquez. Ai Ogura crossed the line fourth.
Why it matters
The result reshuffles the title fight with the season entering its final stretch. Martín now leads the championship on 355 points, with Márquez on 353 — a gap of just two points, as reported by RTVE.es. Bezzecchi's win lifts him to 309 points and keeps him in the hunt, while Pedro Acosta sits fourth on 254 and Ogura fifth on 250.
The race also underlined Aprilia's strength at Mandalika. RTVE.es reported that the Italian manufacturer achieved a historic sweep of the first four positions, with Ogura's late charge through the field described as evidence of how much better the Aprilias performed at the Indonesian track.
How the race unfolded
Raúl Fernández started from pole and held the lead through the opening corners after Bezzecchi threatened to snatch first place at the start. Márquez slotted in behind the pair, while Martín dropped to sixth off the line.
Martín's recovery was swift. RTVE.es reported that he benefited from Fermín Aldeguer's crash and had caught and passed Márquez within the first three laps. The championship leader at the time, Márquez lacked pace, and Acosta closed on him before making a pass on lap seven of the Indonesian circuit. At that stage Martín briefly held a one-point lead over Márquez in the standings.
The race settled around its midpoint. Fernández kept roughly half a second over Bezzecchi, who was pressing and set the fastest lap of the race in the low 1:30s, according to RTVE.es. Martín ran a clean race in third, clear of Acosta and Márquez behind him. Márquez regained fourth place as Acosta struggled with tire temperature and pressure problems.
For Martín, the closing laps were about concentration rather than attack. RTVE.es reported that he had no realistic chance of gaining positions from third but plenty to lose if he made a mistake and allowed Márquez, his closest rival, through.
On lap 19, Bezzecchi took the lead from Fernández with a pass in a corner. In trying to respond, Fernández made an error that nearly cost him a podium finish. From there, the Italian pulled away, setting another fastest lap and opening a gap of a second and a half over the Spanish rider.
Two laps later Acosta retook fourth from Márquez. Márquez then had to look over his shoulder as Ogura, who had been coming through strongly from the back of the field, passed him quickly. RTVE.es reported that the Japanese rider also got past Acosta in the closing laps, further demonstrating Aprilia's advantage at the circuit.
The championship picture
Martín's third place was enough to put him back in front of Márquez, who had taken the lead earlier in the race weekend's calculations. The margin is two points with the championship heading to Australia in two weeks, where Martín will defend the lead.
Bezzecchi's victory, his reward for a patient pursuit of Fernández, keeps him within striking distance of the top two. Acosta remains fourth and Ogura fifth after a ride that RTVE.es framed as a sign of what the Aprilias were capable of on this track.
The next round in Australia will be the first test of whether Martín can hold the advantage he regained at Mandalika, or whether Márquez and Bezzecchi can close the gap further.
