Beşiktaş defeated Kocaelispor 2-1 at home in the Süper Lig on Sunday, with Dusan Vlahovic converting a first-half penalty that proved to be the winning goal, according to Hürriyet.

The result lifted Beşiktaş to 15 points, ending the week second in the table behind leaders Galatasaray. Kocaelispor stayed on 12 points.

Orkun Kökçü opened the scoring in the 18th minute. The goal came after Murillo played the ball in behind the defense, and Vaclav Cerny delivered a low cross from the right. Kökçü struck from the right diagonal inside the penalty area, sending the ball into the far corner for a 1-0 lead.

Kocaelispor equalized in the 27th minute. Uğur Kaan took a corner from the left, and goalkeeper Nübel failed to clear the ball, allowing Show to put it into the net to make it 1-1.

The visitors had threatened before that. In the 20th minute, Sissoho struck hard from outside the penalty area and the ball came back off the right post. Five minutes later, Sissoho again found space inside the box on the right diagonal after a pass from Agyei, but Nübel pushed his effort behind for a corner.

Why it matters

The win ended a one-match interruption in Beşiktaş's results and kept the club within touching distance of the top of the table. Hürriyet reported that Beşiktaş, sitting on 15 points, finished the week in second place behind Galatasaray, while Kocaelispor remained on 12 points.

For Kocaelispor, the defeat leaves the side without the points that would have strengthened its position in the standings. The match also carried weight because of the penalty decision that separated the teams, a call that shaped the final score.

The penalty that decided the match

The decisive moment arrived in the 29th minute. After Cerny took a corner from the right, Djalo went down inside the penalty area following a challenge from Tayfur. Referee Abdullah Buğra Taşkınsoy pointed to the spot, according to Hürriyet.

Vlahovic stepped up in the 31st minute and sent the ball into the bottom right corner, restoring Beşiktaş's lead at 2-1. That goal settled both the first-half score and the final result.

Kocaelispor pushed for a second equalizer after the break. In the 48th minute, a long ball was played in behind the Beşiktaş defense and Metehan found himself in a one-on-one position. His shot was saved by Nübel, and the loose ball then struck the crossbar before going out.

Three minutes later, Fabio Miretti played in İlhan Fakılı on the right. Fakılı entered the penalty area and shot from the right diagonal, but goalkeeper Serhat turned the ball behind for a corner. In the 76th minute, Fakılı tried again from the left diagonal just outside the penalty arc, and the ball went narrowly wide of the far post.

Lineups and what comes next

Beşiktaş started Nübel, Murillo, Djalo, Emirhan, Rıdvan, Salih, Miretti, Orkun, Cerny, Trossard and Vlahovic.

Kocaelispor's starting eleven was Serhat, Uğur, Onur, Emir, Show, Sissoho, Berkan, Tayfur, Agyei, Sousa and Metehan.

Hürriyet also noted that Vlahovic's start to his Beşiktaş spell has been among the best of the 21st century for the club, describing it as a "storm" in its coverage of the striker. The penalty against Kocaelispor added to that run.

Beşiktaş will travel to face Trabzonspor in the next round of league fixtures. Kocaelispor will host Göztepe at home. Both matches will show whether Beşiktaş can keep pace with Galatasaray at the top and whether Kocaelispor can recover from Sunday's loss.
