Bangladesh's Prime Minister has announced that village police will receive higher pay, and that the government will also cover their monthly mobile phone bills, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). The announcement was reported by BSS on Saturday, 7 November 2026.
The Prime Minister's statement covers both salaries and allowances for the force, BSS reported. Under the plan, the state will pay the mobile phone expenses of village police members each month.
Alongside the pay announcement, the role is being given a new public identity. According to Jugantor, the post of dafadar will now be known as "gram police prodhan," or village police chief. Dhaka Diary reported that moholladars and dafadars will from now on be identified as "village police."
Bangla Tribune and The Daily Ittefaq both reported that the government has raised the salaries of village police, with The Daily Ittefaq noting the monthly mobile bill provision. The reports did not specify the size of the pay increase, the amount of the mobile allowance, or when the changes take effect.
Village police are a local-level force that works alongside the regular police in rural areas of Bangladesh. The reported changes affect both their pay and how the force is officially described.
It remains to be seen when the new pay structure will be implemented and whether the government will publish the details of the revised salary grades and the mobile allowance.
