Arsenal came from a goal behind to defeat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates on Saturday, scoring twice in eight second-half minutes through Riccardo Calafiori and substitute Bruno Guimaraes.

The result lifts Mikel Arteta's side level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City, according to Sky Sports, and hands Daniel Farke's Leeds their first league defeat of the season.

James Justin had put Leeds ahead 10 minutes after half-time, finishing at the back post from a cross that travelled across the Arsenal goal. It was a lead the visitors had earned over the opening hour.

Why it matters

Arsenal went into the match under pressure. Sky Sports reports the champions had lost 3-0 to Brighton before the international break, and a second consecutive defeat would have turned an early-season stumble into a wider concern.

Leeds arrived with the joint-best defensive record in the division and had not lost a Premier League game this season. For much of the afternoon at the Emirates, they looked capable of extending that run.

The comeback also capped a significant week for Arteta, who signed a new contract running until 2030, as reported by Sky Sports. The win keeps Arsenal in step with City at the summit, with Enzo Maresca's side due to face Liverpool at Anfield on Super Sunday.

Leeds control the first hour

Leeds were the better side for the best part of an hour, and the statistics support that reading. Arsenal managed only five shots in the opening 55 minutes before Leeds scored, while David Raya was called into four saves to keep the visitors out before the deadlock was broken.

Noah Okafor had an early sight of goal in the eighth minute when a cleared corner fell to him, but his deflected effort drifted wide of the far post. In the 21st minute, Noni Madueke worked space down the left and delivered a cross that Kai Havertz headed straight at James Trafford.

Leeds threatened again in the 25th minute when Anton Stach found himself unmarked at the far post, only for the shot to be blocked by his own teammate Jayden Bogle. Two minutes later, Raya came out well to deny Bogle after a loose ball ran into the box.

Raya was busy again in the 34th minute, punching a Leeds free-kick clear before Ethan Ampadu's header nearly caught him out, the goalkeeper holding the ball on his own line.

Justin curled an effort just wide of the far corner in the 52nd minute, and a minute later Raya tipped Ao Tanaka's long-range drive over the bar for his fourth save of the game. The pressure finally told in the 55th minute, when Justin crashed the ball in at the back post from Gudmundsson's cross.

Two goals in eight minutes turn the game

Arsenal's response was swift, and it began with a mistake at the other end. Seven minutes after Justin's opener, Madueke delivered a cross that Ben White turned across the penalty area, leaving Calafiori to convert from close range. Sky Sports noted that Trafford, the Leeds goalkeeper who had been given a chance by Thomas Tuchel during the latest England camp, failed to keep the effort out.

Arteta, who had stood unmoved on the touchline as his side levelled, followed the goal with a triple substitution he had already planned. One of the three changes was Guimaraes, and five minutes after coming on he put Arsenal in front.

The move began with Martin Odegaard's ball forward, which Declan Rice flicked into the path of the Brazilian on the edge of the box. Guimaraes struck the ball into the bottom corner.

Arsenal had managed five shots in the 15 minutes after Leeds scored, including both goals. The turnaround changed the mood inside the stadium and, by Arteta's own account, the energy of his team.

Leeds had one late reprieve when Odegaard had a chance to seal the points from two yards out in the 83rd minute, but Rice's cross came off his boot and Trafford held on.

Arteta points to character, Farke to mentality

Speaking after the match, Arteta said his players had faced two tasks: meeting the challenge of an unbeaten opponent and answering questions raised by the Brighton defeat, particularly the way the team had responded in a difficult situation.

He said Arsenal started well and dominated but did not make enough of the spaces and overloads available to them, which kept the game open. He described Leeds as a side that needs little encouragement to threaten, noting how dangerous they are whenever the ball goes into the box.

Arteta called a 1-0 deficit at home, after a defeat, in a 12.30pm kick-off a bad combination, and said his team escaped it by rediscovering their desire to win and showing personality and courage. Once the equaliser went in, he said, the energy shifted and the substitutes made a large difference.

He added that he expects every week to follow a similar pattern, saying none of the games he watched during the international break suggested anything different.

Farke, meanwhile, said the emotions of the defeat were hard to put into words. He congratulated Arsenal and attributed the result to the mentality Arteta has built at the club, noting that even on a difficult day they found a way to win.

What to watch next

Arsenal now sit level on points with Manchester City, whose trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Super Sunday will determine whether the champions end the weekend alone at the top. Leeds, beaten for the first time this season, will look to respond when the Premier League resumes.
