Two masked people carrying a firearm entered a private home in Kvam in Vestland county overnight and tried to pressure the people inside into giving up valuables, according to VG. Police were alerted at around 3 a.m. on Saturday, and the case is being investigated as an aggravated attempted robbery.

A family of four lives in the house, VG reports, citing on-duty police prosecutor Trine-Benedikte Opdal. The two children in the home were asleep and did not register what happened, she told the outlet.

Why it matters

The case stands out because the intrusion happened while a family was at home and asleep, and because the perpetrators were armed. Opdal told VG that the two adults present were subjected to violence of differing severity, and that the man living at the address received treatment from health services for his injuries.

She confirmed to the outlet that no weapon was discharged during the incident. Beyond describing the weapon as a firearm, police have not given further details about it.

Police in Vestland received the first report from one of the people who was targeted, according to the police log cited by VG. The log entry was written by operations leader Knut Dahl-Michelsen.

Investigation and public appeal

Authorities are asking residents in the Øystese area for surveillance footage from the night of the incident, specifically between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Saturday. VG reports that police want material from private cameras that may have captured movement in the area during that window.

Opdal declined to tell VG whether investigators have identified any specific suspects. She also said police have no information suggesting the parties involved had any prior relationship.

"I cannot say anything more about this right now. We are currently not aware of the lead-up to the incident," she told the outlet.

The case is classified as an aggravated attempted robbery, a designation Norwegian police use for serious cases of this kind. Police have not released further information about how the perpetrators entered the home or how they left.

What to watch

Investigators are relying in part on public assistance, and the surveillance footage appeal suggests they are still working to establish the movements of the two people before and after the intrusion. Whether police identify suspects, and whether the footage produces leads, is the next development to watch.
