Zimbabwe has been urged to consolidate its steel demand as part of efforts to revive the country's rail industry, Herald.co.zw reported on Thursday.

The call comes amid a broader push to restore capacity at the National Railways of Zimbabwe. According to Herald.co.zw, governance reforms and audits are seen as key to unlocking capital for the state-owned operator, while a separate report by the same outlet said NRZ is moving to clear a backlog of annual general meetings as equipment renewal gathers pace.

Freight demand is also testing the recovery effort. Mjengo Hub reported that lithium shipments are putting pressure on Zimbabwe's railway system, while DailyNews.co.zw said NRZ is driving a revival of rail capacity.

The reports point to a sector attempting to rebuild after years of underinvestment, with steel supply, corporate accountability and growing mineral freight volumes all shaping how quickly that recovery can proceed.

What to watch next: whether NRZ's governance and equipment programmes translate into measurable gains in freight volumes.
