A large, unleashed dog killed two small pets in Hong Kong’s Yuen Long district on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. The 60kg dog attacked a poodle and a Bichon Frise near the YOHO mall area, with both small dogs dying from their injuries within a short span of time.
The owner of the Bichon Frise, identified in reports as grieving the loss, described the pet as a “little angel” in comments carried by The Standard (HK). The same outlet and the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that the owner of the large dog was arrested following the incident.
The attacks occurred within roughly half an hour, according to AsiaOne, citing China News. The Standard (HK) first reported the mauling deaths on Tuesday, and The Online Citizen also covered the incident, noting it took place in the YOHO mall area.
Police have not released further details about the arrested owner or the specific charges, based on the available reporting. The case highlights ongoing concerns about leash laws and large-breed dog control in Hong Kong’s urban spaces.

The SCMP report confirms the large dog was unleashed at the time of the attacks. The Bichon Frise’s owner’s emotional tribute has drawn attention to the sudden loss of a companion animal in a public setting.
What to watch next: Authorities may face questions over enforcement of dog-leash regulations in the district, and whether the large dog’s owner will face criminal charges.
