Chinese state media are presenting Xi Jinping's historic visit to Washington as a defining moment in US-China relations, according to reports published Tuesday by 新华网客户端 and other outlets.
新华网客户端 framed the trip under the theme of head-of-state diplomacy guiding a new chapter in ties between the two countries. CCTV reported that American figures across various sectors gave high marks to what it described as Xi's historic visit, saying it left a notable mark on the history of bilateral relations. Beijing's municipal government portal reported that Xi and Peng Liyuan attended a welcome banquet hosted by President Trump and his wife. Sina News published a video report on Xi's time in Washington, describing the trip as one that carries the relationship forward.
The coverage centers on the ceremonial and diplomatic dimensions of the visit, with Chinese outlets emphasizing the reception Xi received and the significance Chinese officials attach to the meeting between the two presidents.
Not all coverage focused on the same points. BBC noted that at the Trump-Xi summit, the topics left unspoken may have been more important than those discussed publicly — a reminder that the agenda visible in official accounts is not necessarily the full one.
The visit has generated a wave of commentary in Chinese media, but the reporting available so far offers limited detail on specific agreements or outcomes. What the two sides said publicly, and what they did not, will shape how the trip is judged in the weeks ahead.
