A woman in her 60s has died after a van and a passenger car collided head-on on road 160 near Myggenäs on the island of Tjörn, according to police. The crash happened at around 4pm on Monday, SVT Nyheter reports.

The woman's relatives have been notified, police said. The other driver, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Why it matters

Road 160 is a main route across Tjörn, and a fatal collision on it during the afternoon affects more than the two vehicles involved. The road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene, which disrupted traffic on a busy stretch of the island.

The case also illustrates how quickly a serious crash can move from response to investigation. Within hours of the collision, police had opened a preliminary inquiry and later left the scene, while the injured driver was receiving hospital care.

Emergency response and road closure

Police, fire and rescue services and ambulance crews were sent to the location after the alarm was raised. One of the ambulance resources dispatched was a helicopter, SVT Nyheter reports.

At first, the road was fully closed in both directions, according to police press spokesperson Johan Håkansson, who spoke to SVT Nyheter while the response was still under way. That closure has since been lifted, and police have left the site.

SVT Nyheter notes that in the early stages of breaking news it can be difficult to confirm every detail, and that the outlet reports what is known and what is not.

Preliminary investigation opened

Police are initially treating the incident as reckless driving in traffic, SVT Nyheter reports. No one is suspected of any offence at this stage.

The inquiry remains at an early point. Police have not said whether the investigation will be widened, and no further details about the circumstances of the collision have been released.

Other Swedish outlets, including Aftonbladet, Omni and ST-tidningen, also reported the collision and the woman's death.

What to watch: whether police update the classification of the investigation or name a suspect as the preliminary inquiry continues.
