West Bengal's industry minister met with business leaders this week to discuss hurdles facing the state's manufacturing sector, according to Anandabazar Patrika. The talks centered on demands for incentive allowances and persistent land acquisition problems that companies say are blocking new investment.

The meeting comes as the state government, led by Suvendu Adhikari, seeks input from the business community to shape a new industrial policy, Aajkaal reports. Officials indicated a major announcement could come as early as August, with the government aiming to address long-standing complaints about bureaucratic delays and extortion, according to Sangbad Pratidin.

Anandabazar Patrika also reported that the minister confirmed ongoing discussions to persuade the Tata Group to return to West Bengal. The outlet noted that the minister blamed former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the compensation issues that arose after Tata's earlier exit from the Singur project.

The state's business community has repeatedly cited red tape and local extortion as major deterrents to investment. The new policy is expected to tackle these issues directly, with ministers listening to merchant association representatives during the recent round of consultations.

The push to bring Tata back is seen as a symbolic test of the government's ability to rebuild trust with corporate investors. A successful return could signal a shift in the state's investment climate, while failure would reinforce existing skepticism.

What to watch next: Whether the August policy announcement includes concrete measures on land acquisition and a clear timeline for Tata's potential return.
