The Visayas power grid was placed under a yellow alert on Thursday, August 6, 2026, as several generating units remained unavailable, according to The Manila Times. The alert signals a tight supply-demand situation, though it does not necessarily mean rotating blackouts are imminent.

The Philippine grid operator issued the notice after determining that the available capacity was insufficient to comfortably cover projected demand, the report said. Multiple power plants were offline at the time, reducing the system’s operating margin. The Manila Times noted that the yellow alert is the first of two warning levels, with a red alert indicating more severe shortages.

The development comes amid broader volatility in the country’s electricity market. Separate reports from Inquirer.net and ABS-CBN showed that spot market prices in July averaged P8.31 per kilowatt-hour, a decline from previous months. That drop suggests that, despite the current plant outages, overall supply conditions had been relatively stable in the prior period. The lower prices reflect a market where generation costs were not under extreme pressure, even as the Visayas region now faces tighter conditions.

Philstar.com separately warned that blackouts threaten the Visayas area, underscoring the seriousness of the current situation. The combination of unavailable plants and the yellow alert indicates that system operators are monitoring the grid closely and may take further action if more units trip or demand spikes.

What to watch next: Whether the grid operator escalates the alert to red, and how quickly the unavailable plants return to service, will determine if the Visayas faces actual power interruptions in the coming days.
