RC Vannes defeated Union Bordeaux-Bègles in the ninth round of the Top 14 on Sunday, in a match played away from Vannes at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes. Sud Ouest reported that the fixture was relocated and kicked off at 15:00 local time. The result gave the Breton club its second win of the season, according to Le Figaro, and pulled it back into the fight to avoid relegation.
The match was one of the last two of the round, with Stade Rochelais hosting Aviron Bayonnais in the closing game at 21:05. It came a day after the French national team beat Fiji 54-17.
Why it matters
The win carries weight at both ends of the table. Bordeaux-Bègles arrived as reigning European champions, and Le Figaro framed the outcome as Vannes bringing down the continental titleholders. For a side battling relegation, taking a scalp of that size is a significant boost to its survival hopes.
The result also underlines how open the Top 14 can be when a fixture is moved away from a club's usual home. Vannes gave up its own ground for the Nantes staging, yet still came away with the points.
A busy Sunday across sport
Sud Ouest's live coverage rounded up a crowded schedule beyond rugby. In tennis, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton contested the final of the Paris Masters 1000 at 15:00. In Ligue 1, Stade Rennais and RC Lens both went looking for a return to form, hosting Lille at 15:00 and Olympique de Marseille at 20:45 respectively.
The day also included the Qatar MotoGP round and the Brazilian Formula 1 Grand Prix, plus England against Australia in the Nations Championship. Sud Ouest presented all of it as part of its rolling Sunday sports coverage.
Attention now turns to the closing fixture of round nine, La Rochelle against Bayonne, and to whether Vannes can build on a result that has reopened the relegation battle.
