The US vice president has attributed the Republican Party's midterm election defeat to the ongoing war with Iran, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports. In a post on X on Wednesday, he wrote that the real reason for the loss is obvious to nearly everyone. The statement followed Tuesday's midterm vote, in which the Democrats made major gains.

According to NRK, the vice president pointed to the conflict with Iran, which has been running since late February. Before the election, President Donald Trump and the Republicans held majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Democrats are now set to take control of both chambers.

Why it matters

The result reverses the balance of power in Washington and gives the Democrats leverage over the president's agenda for the remainder of his term. It also turns the Iran conflict into a domestic political reckoning: a war fought abroad has now been assigned direct blame for a governing party's electoral collapse at home.

NRK reports that the war has been costly for the Trump administration. Its effects have also spread well beyond the United States, with serious consequences for the wider global economy.

An energy shock with global reach

Central to that economic fallout is the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. According to NRK, the shutdown produced one of the most dramatic energy shocks on record and drove oil prices higher around the world.

The consequences were felt quickly at home. NRK reports that fuel prices at American pumps climbed to extremely high levels, a development that proved deeply unpopular politically. Higher costs did not stop at the forecourt: prices for other goods were pushed up as well, and the overall cost of living rose sharply.

That combination — a distant war, a choked shipping route and rising household bills — appears to have shaped the political environment in which voters cast their ballots on Tuesday.

A defeat explained from the top

The vice president's public explanation is notable for how directly it ties the party's fortunes to a single foreign policy decision. Rather than pointing to campaign tactics or local races, his post on X framed the outcome as a near-universal conclusion.

NRK notes that the assessment came one day after the vote, as the scale of the Democratic victory became clear. The party's wins in both the Senate and the House mark a significant shift from the starting position, when Republicans controlled both chambers.

The statement also places the Iran war at the center of how the administration interprets its own losses, at least publicly. Whether that framing becomes the party's accepted account, or is contested by other Republican figures in the days ahead, remains to be seen.

What happens next will depend in part on how the incoming Democratic majorities use their control of Congress, and on whether the administration adjusts its approach to a war it has now publicly identified as the cause of its electoral defeat.
