Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has said the South-East has no presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election, Channels Television reported on Sunday, 1 November 2026. In the same remarks, he said he is firmly behind President Bola Tinubu's re-election, according to Vanguard.

Umahi also pushed back at comparisons with Peter Obi, stating that Obi is not a better option than him, Punch Newspapers reported. The Nation Newspaper reported that the governor asked the Christian Association of Nigeria and traditional rulers to back Tinubu's return to office.

The governor described himself as a leading figure in the South-East, Vanguard reported, framing his support for Tinubu as a deliberate political choice rather than a default. The comments place him at odds with expectations in some quarters that the region would rally behind a candidate of its own in 2027.

The remarks also feed into a wider conversation about Obi's political weight. Realnews Magazine, in a separate piece carried in the same round-up, examined what it called the Peter Obi phenomenon, suggesting the former candidate's public appeal remains a subject of analysis.

Taken together, the reports point to a South-East political class that is not speaking with one voice about 2027. Umahi's position as a governor and a prominent figure from the region gives his statement weight, but it does not settle the question of whether the zone will ultimately present a candidate.

What to watch next: whether other South-East governors and political leaders respond to Umahi's declaration, and whether any candidate from the region enters the 2027 race despite it.
