Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that it is becoming increasingly clear that Russia has no intention of agreeing to a ceasefire covering the energy sector, according to De Telegraaf.
Zelensky also said six Ukrainian energy facilities had been struck by Russia, de Volkskrant reported.
His remarks came the same day US President Donald Trump announced an immediate "energy truce," NOS reported. Ukraine said it had no knowledge of any such agreement and was waiting for details.
Trump also renewed his criticism of Zelensky, saying it was once again clear that the Ukrainian leader is unreliable, according to NU.
The statements point to a widening gap between Washington's account of a deal and Kyiv's account of events on the ground. Trump presented the truce as taking effect at once, while Ukraine's leadership indicated it had not been informed of the terms. AD.nl reported that Russia carried out a fresh attack after Trump announced the truce, citing Zelensky.
The energy sector has been a repeated target during the war, and a halt to strikes there would have marked a significant step. Instead, the competing accounts left the status of any arrangement unclear.
What to watch next: whether Washington provides details of the announced truce and whether further strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure follow.
