Britain will keep its consulate building in East Jerusalem open under a new name after Israel ordered the mission closed, according to Gazeta. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband confirmed that the site will continue to operate as a British representative office, and staff removed the building's signs overnight while leaving the British flags in place.

The deadline Israel set for the closure fell on Thursday, 8 October 2026. Israel's foreign minister, Gideon Saar, announced the shutdown in September, and Israeli authorities demanded that the consulate cease functioning. Rather than vacate the premises, London rebranded the post as the "British Mission in Jerusalem."

Why it matters

The standoff tests how far Israel can restrict a foreign mission that has served Palestinians for decades, and how far Britain is willing to go to preserve its presence on the ground. The consulate handled relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and also provided consular services to Palestinian residents. Its closure would have removed a long-standing Western diplomatic channel to those communities. By keeping the building and a reduced staff in place, Britain retains a foothold while avoiding a direct confrontation over the property itself.

A response to the settlements import ban

Saar's September announcement came in reaction to Britain and 11 other countries, Poland among them, saying they would ban imports from illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israel built hundreds of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem after capturing both territories in the 1967 Six-Day War. The international community considers those settlements illegal under international law. Palestinians want the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza to form part of a future state of their own.

Miliband said the renamed mission is independent, is operating, and will keep providing necessary services while supporting Britain's work with the Palestinian people. He said the arrangement allows the United Kingdom to maintain its long-standing presence and its role in backing a two-state solution.

Staff withdrawn, no retaliation for now

The foreign secretary also confirmed that Britain has temporarily pulled out a number of employees and their family members to keep them safe. He said London will work over the coming months to rebuild its presence and will not take retaliatory steps as long as those discussions continue and remain credible.

Saar, quoted by the Times of Israel, said on Thursday that 20 British diplomats would leave Israel. He added that the British government would keep operating in the building it owns with a staff capped at seven people, and that the site would no longer function as a consulate.

What to watch is whether the reduced mission can keep delivering consular services to Palestinians, and whether the talks Miliband referred to produce a wider settlement over the building's status.
