The UK government will not publish a “shopping list” telling the public what to stockpile for emergencies, according to The Guardian. The position emerged in the outlet’s live coverage of UK politics on Friday.

The Guardian reports the decision alongside warnings from Wes Streeting about supply chain disruption. According to the BBC, the minister said households should prepare for disruption caused by cyber or climate emergencies. The Times reports he also warned the public to prepare for food shortages and disruption.

Official guidance has taken the form of encouragement rather than a prescribed list. GOV.UK says households are being encouraged to take small, simple steps to stay prepared in an emergency. Sky News described the accompanying “Be Ready” checklist as a national resilience moment that “almost barely happened.”

The reporting places the guidance within a wider government push on national resilience, with ministers framing preparedness as a matter of modest household measures rather than bulk buying. The Guardian’s account makes clear that no official list of items for the public to accumulate has been issued.

Separately, Andy Burnham met armed forces veterans and Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal collectors to mark the start of this year’s campaign. He received them at the Number 10 North office in central Manchester, rather than following the usual convention of making a donation on the steps of Downing Street.

What to watch next: whether the government publishes fuller guidance on household readiness, and how the “Be Ready” checklist is received.
