Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has wrapped up a visit to Kigali, according to a statement from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The trip, which took place in late July 2026, focused on bilateral engagement between the two neighbouring countries.
During his stay, Gen Kainerugaba toured key infrastructure developments in the Rwandan capital, the UPDF reported. He also held discussions with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, as covered by The New Times. The talks reportedly centred on strengthening ties between Uganda and Rwanda.
In a lighter moment, photos published by Pulse Uganda showed President Kagame playing basketball alongside Gen Kainerugaba and Rwandan journalist Andrew Mwenda. The image underscored the informal side of the diplomatic visit.

The visit comes amid ongoing efforts by both nations to improve relations after years of tension. Uganda and Rwanda have been working to normalise border trade and security cooperation since a 2019 rapprochement. Gen Kainerugaba’s trip signals continued high-level dialogue between the two governments.
Observers will watch for any concrete agreements or joint statements emerging from the discussions in Kigali.
