UAE investigators say a Flydubai co-pilot attacked the flight captain with an axe in what they describe as an attempted terrorist act, according to Al Jazeera. The incident has drawn international attention, with Al Jazeera reporting on the still-unidentified co-pilot at the center of the case.
A UAE official said the co-pilot used an axe against the captain, the BBC reported. The Wall Street Journal identified the weapon as a "crash axe," a tool commonly carried on many commercial jets. DW also reported that Emirati investigators characterized the co-pilot's actions as an attempted terrorist act.
CNN reported that images associated with terrorism were found on the suspect's social media accounts. Al Jazeera's coverage focuses on questions about the co-pilot's identity, which has not been publicly established in the reporting summarized here.
The reports come from multiple outlets citing UAE officials and investigators. No details were provided in the available material about the flight's route, the date of the incident, the condition of the captain, or the current status of the co-pilot.
What to watch next: whether UAE authorities release the co-pilot's identity and further findings from the ongoing investigation.
