US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has offered the White House press secretary position to Dana White, the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The offer was made in a post on Truth Social, and White responded hours later with an Instagram post that indicated he was taking the job, according to G1.
In his Truth Social message, Trump said he asked White to bring along several figures from the fighting world as assistants. The list he named includes Brazilian former champion Amanda Nunes, whom the post described as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history.
Why it matters
The press secretary's office is the most visible communications post in the US government, and handing it to a sports executive with no government background is an unusual step. Trump framed the choice as a combative one, saying the people he named would help defend his administration against what he called the "lunatic left." The announcement also puts a Brazilian athlete, Nunes, into a conversation about staffing at the highest level of the US executive branch.
Who Trump named as assistants
Alongside Nunes, Trump's post listed Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Daniel Cormier and Kayla Harris as the aides he wanted White to bring. He acknowledged that some of them are not American, writing that he had asked White to bring "some assistants, even if some are not from our country," as reported by G1.
The president closed the post with a direct appeal to White, saying he would be a press secretary unlike any other and urging him to take the offer. G1 reports that Trump wrote: "Dana, please accept the position!"
White's response
Hours after the president's post, White published an image on Instagram that appeared to accept the invitation. The picture, which G1 reports was generated with artificial intelligence, showed him standing at a podium beside the American flag. His caption read: "Next chapter."
Neither post offered details on timing, a start date, or what would happen to the current press secretary. G1's reporting does not say whether the appointment has been formalized beyond the exchange between the two men on social media.
A relationship built outside politics
White has long been a public supporter of Trump, and the two have appeared together at UFC events. The offer extends that association into the communications operation of the White House, a role that involves daily exchanges with reporters and the public presentation of administration policy.
The names on Trump's list are drawn largely from mixed martial arts, a sport White has led for years. Nunes, a Brazilian, is a former two-division UFC champion. Makhachev and Nurmagomedov are Russian fighters, Gaethje and Cormier are American, and Harris is a former UFC fighter. G1's report does not explain what duties, if any, each of them would carry.
What to watch is whether the appointment is confirmed formally and when White would take up the role.
