A student from Tralee, Aoibheann Daly, has won the Core Prize at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists, according to the Irish Independent. The award was announced at the close of the competition, which RTE.ie reported on Monday, 28 September 2026.

Daly's success was covered widely by Irish media. The Irish Independent named her as the winner of the Core Prize, while Silicon Republic described her as an Irish YSTE winner who took a major prize at the EU science competition. RadioKerry.ie and the Irish Examiner both reported that she also received a Special Jury Award for Youth at the same contest.

The European Union Contest for Young Scientists is a long-running event that brings together young researchers from across Europe to present their work. Daly's entry to the competition followed her earlier win at the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, or YSTE, according to Silicon Republic. The Core Prize is one of the awards handed out at the European contest, though the reporting did not specify its value or category. The Special Jury Award for Youth is a separate honour, which RadioKerry.ie and the Irish Examiner reported was also given to Daly.

The reports did not include details of Daly's project or the other competitors at the event. RTE.ie, the Irish Independent, Silicon Republic, RadioKerry.ie and the Irish Examiner all carried news of the result.

Further details on Daly's project and the full list of prize winners are expected to emerge as the contest organisers publish their results.
