Police have arrested two people after a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by multiple men on a moving bus traveling from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi, according to The Times of India.
The assault took place during a roughly 47-kilometer journey that ended at Delhi's Kashmere Gate terminal. The Times of India reports that the bus driver and conductor are among those held in connection with the incident.
Reports from NDTV and The New Indian Express say the attack occurred in the Greater Noida area. ThePrint adds that the bus was largely empty at the time, and heavy rain and drawn curtains made it difficult for anyone outside to see what was happening inside.
The girl had reportedly been looking for a ride when she boarded the bus. ThePrint describes the route as a 47-kilometer detour, suggesting the vehicle did not follow a direct path to its stated destination. The Times of India notes that darkness and the weather conditions contributed to the assault going unnoticed during the ride.
Police have not yet released details on how many suspects are involved beyond the two arrests, or whether additional people are being sought. Authorities have not commented publicly on the victim's condition or where she is receiving care.
The case adds to a pattern of sexual violence reported on public transport in India, though each incident is distinct. Investigators are expected to examine the bus company's records and passenger manifests to determine if other staff or passengers were aware of the attack. The next step will likely be a formal chargesheet, which will outline the specific offenses filed against the accused.
