A tanker passing through the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified projectile, YTN reported on Sunday. All crew members aboard were reported safe.
The vessel was hit while transiting the strait, according to YTN. The report did not identify the ship, its flag, or the origin of the projectile.
Separately, Iran's state-linked accounts described the incident differently. Newsis reported that Iran said a large tanker traveling on an undesignated route in the Strait of Hormuz struck a mine and exploded. YTN's account and Iran's account of what struck the vessel do not match.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and one of the world's most important oil transit routes. Incidents there draw close attention from shipping and energy markets.
The same day, oil prices closed slightly higher, according to Maeil Business TV. That report also cited a hurricane that halted 72 percent of crude production in the Gulf of Mexico, a separate disruption to supply.
The YTN report gave no details on the extent of damage to the tanker or on any response by naval forces in the area.
What to watch next: whether shipping authorities or the vessel's operator confirm the cause of the strike, and whether traffic through the strait is affected.
