Tamron has added the 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD to its Nikon Z lineup, according to Notified. The lens, which the outlet describes as a compact zoom pairing a 20mm ultra-wide angle with a constant F2.8 aperture across the range, was already established for Sony E mount. Notified reports that the Nikon Z version begins shipping in October 2026 with a recommended retail price of 8,299 SEK including VAT.
Why it matters
The release widens the options for Nikon Z shooters who want a fast, wide zoom without carrying a large or heavy lens. Notified notes that despite the constant F2.8 aperture, the Nikon Z version measures just 88.7mm in length and weighs 380g, a combination the outlet frames as a light-travel alternative for photographers and filmmakers who still want access to F2.8.
It also marks another step in Tamron's expansion of its Nikon Z catalog, following a lens that had already found a place in the Sony E system. For buyers, the practical question is whether a 20-40mm range covers enough ground to serve as an everyday lens rather than a specialist tool.
A range built for everyday use
Notified describes the 20-40mm span as intended for general photography and video. At the wide end, the outlet says 20mm suits landscapes, architecture, interiors, travel and video work. At 40mm, it points to a more natural perspective for street photography, everyday images and portraits. On APS-C cameras, Notified reports the angle of view is equivalent to roughly 30-60mm on full frame.
That framing positions the lens as a walk-around option rather than a single-purpose ultra-wide. The 20mm end is also described as well suited to handheld video and vlogging, and the lens's compact size is said to fit smaller gimbals. According to Notified, the barrel extends by only 9.2mm when zooming, which the outlet says helps maintain balance.
Autofocus is handled by Tamron's VXD linear motor. Notified characterizes it as fast, precise and quiet for both stills and video, a combination aimed at users who switch between the two.
Optical design and close focusing
The lens is built from 12 elements in 11 groups, according to Notified. That count includes four LD elements, two aspherical GM elements and one hybrid aspherical element. The outlet states that Tamron's BBAR-G2 coating reduces ghosting and flare and contributes to high contrast in difficult lighting.
Close focusing is a notable part of the specification. Notified reports a minimum focusing distance of 0.17m at 20mm, with a maximum magnification of 1:3.8. The outlet says this lets users get close to a subject while still including the surrounding scene in a clear wide-angle perspective.
Other details reported by Notified include a 67mm filter diameter, a moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element. The lens is also compatible with Tamron Lens Utility, which allows selected functions to be customized.
The distributor listed for the announcement is Focus Nordic, which Notified describes as a leading European distributor of photo, video and optics products, representing more than 70 brands across 28 markets. The outlet puts Focus Nordic's estimated annual turnover at over 100 million euros and notes that the company also develops its own brands, including Focus Frames and Albums and Focus Sport Optics.
What to watch
The Nikon Z version of the 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD is scheduled to reach buyers in October 2026, with availability and final pricing in individual markets still to be confirmed by local sellers.
