Sporting’s starting eleven for Saturday’s match against Alverca includes one major unresolved selection, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola. The club’s coaching staff, led by Rui Borges, has yet to settle on the final choice for a key position, with photos from training showing the squad preparing for the fixture.
The match, scheduled for August 22, 2026, pits Sporting against third-tier side Alverca in a cup tie. A Bola’s report focuses on the tactical uncertainty facing Borges, who must decide between options for one starting spot. The outlet did not specify which player or position is in question, but the ambiguity suggests a close competition among candidates.
Context from other reports adds depth to the matchup. Terra noted that Alverca will be without Chiquinho and three injured attackers, limiting their offensive options. Alverca coach Sérgio Ferreira, quoted via a Facebook post, said his team plans to rely on a solid collective structure to counter Sporting’s individual talent. Meanwhile, Observador framed the game as potentially decisive for Sporting and Borges, hinting at pressure on the manager to deliver a strong result.
TVI also reported on forward Suárez, stating he has trained well and is waiting for the coach’s call to feature in the lineup. That comment, attributed to an unnamed source, adds to the sense of internal competition at Sporting ahead of the tie.
What to watch next: Borges’ final lineup announcement, expected shortly before kickoff, will reveal which player wins the contested spot and how Sporting approaches a tricky cup encounter away from home.
