Sporting returned to winning ways in the Portuguese league on Saturday, defeating Casa Pia 2-0 in Rio Maior in the opening match of round 10, according to RTP. Pedro Lima opened the scoring and Geny Catamo sealed the result in stoppage time.

The match was the first fixture of the round, and the result ended Sporting's run without a league win.

Why it matters

For a club of Sporting's stature, a stretch without victories in the league carries weight, and RTP framed the result as a return to winning form. The three points keep Rui Borges's side moving in the right direction ahead of a congested stretch of fixtures.

The clean sheet will also register. Sporting's defensive organization held up for long spells, and the back line dealt with Casa Pia's attempts to counter quickly, particularly before the interval.

Early breakthrough sets the tone

Sporting started the match intent on dictating play, pushing Casa Pia back into their own defensive half. The approach paid off inside a quarter of an hour.

In the 13th minute, a flowing team move ended with Iván Fresneda picking out Pedro Lima, who finished accurately to open the scoring in Rio Maior. RTP described the assist as precise and the finish as sure.

With the lead secured, Sporting kept control of possession and continued to probe, adding further approaches and shots on goal in search of a second. Casa Pia looked to respond through quick transitions, but Sporting's defensive shape snuffed out those efforts with regularity before the break.

Second-half resistance and a late clincher

After halftime, Casa Pia pushed their lines higher and tried to force their way back into the contest. The visitors threatened when Pedro Rosas struck a powerful shot that required goalkeeper Kaique to make an alert save.

Sporting answered with a series of fast transitions of their own. Flávio Gonçalves came close to doubling the advantage but was denied by Casa Pia goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira.

The cushion finally arrived in stoppage time. With Casa Pia chasing an equalizer, their goalkeeper had gone up into Sporting's penalty area for a corner. Sporting broke at speed from that situation, and Geny Catamo finished accurately to make it 2-0 and settle the outcome.

Rui Borges had made sweeping changes to his starting eleven for the fixture, according to A Bola, and the reshuffled lineup delivered the result. SAPO reported that the relief at the final whistle brought the group together.

Sporting's next league assignment will show whether the win marks the start of a sustained run; Casa Pia, meanwhile, will look to convert their second-half pressure into points in their coming fixtures.
