Leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have called for a coordinated regional push on electric mobility, according to a report from Green Building Africa. The appeal came during the bloc’s 46th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in eThekwini, South Africa, on 17 August 2026.

The summit’s call for action on electric transport signals a growing recognition among member states that the region needs a shared strategy rather than piecemeal national efforts. Green Building Africa reported the summit’s position without detailing specific targets or funding plans.

The meeting also marked a leadership transition. South Africa took over the rotating chairmanship of the 16-country community, as reported by businesstech.co.za. President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a welcome address at the summit, according to Polity.org.za, which published his remarks in full.

The push for electric mobility comes amid broader geopolitical pressures on the bloc. An analysis from the Institute for Security Studies (ISS Africa) argued that SADC’s geopolitical moment will not wait, suggesting that the region faces external and internal challenges that require faster, more decisive collective action.

Not all commentary on the summit was positive. Politicsweb published a critical piece titled “SADC: Empty words, a failing president,” indicating that some observers question whether the bloc’s declarations will translate into meaningful change.

What to watch next: whether SADC member states follow the summit’s electric mobility call with concrete policies, budgets, or cross-border charging and manufacturing agreements.
