Sony is reportedly opening its back catalog of older game franchises to outside licensing, according to PPE.pl. The Polish outlet reports that third parties may now be able to secure rights to classic PlayStation properties, with the possibility of one of those projects becoming a future PlayStation hit.
The move comes amid broader reports that Sony is preparing to bring back classic series around the launch of the PlayStation 6. GameGPU reports that the company is working on reviving well-known franchises alongside the new console. Separately, GameGPU has also reported that a remake of Killzone could arrive with the PlayStation 6, running on a modern version of the Decima engine.
PPE.pl has previously raised the question of whether PlayStation would return to a familiar IP, describing it as a potential major surprise. Taken together, the reports point to a strategy in which Sony leans on its older catalog rather than only on new titles.
None of the reports specify which franchises are involved beyond Killzone, how the licensing process would work, or when any such projects might be announced. The details remain unconfirmed by Sony.
What to watch next: whether Sony officially confirms any licensing program or names the classic franchises it plans to revive, and whether those projects are tied to the PlayStation 6 launch.
