Singapore's government is carrying out trials to work out how AI agents can be deployed responsibly, according to CNA. Minister of State Tan Kiat How said the trials are meant to build understanding of responsible implementation, CNA reported on Wednesday.

Separately, Minister Josephine Teo said Singapore is examining stronger safeguards for high-risk uses of AI as such systems become more autonomous, CNA reported. Teo also said there have been no reports of rogue AI agents attacking Singapore government agencies, according to The Straits Times.

The two sets of remarks point to a government weighing both adoption and control at the same time. Tan has argued Singapore cannot rely on others to define its defenses against AI-related cyber threats, AsiaOne reported, framing the work as something the country must pursue on its own rather than wait for outside guidance.

The financial sector is moving on a parallel track. The Business Times reported that the Monetary Authority of Singapore has issued AI risk management guidelines for the industry, giving firms a framework for governing the technology.

Taken together, the statements and the MAS guidelines suggest Singapore is trying to keep pace with AI agents — software that can act with limited human direction — without committing to rules before it understands how they behave in practice. The trials described by Tan appear intended to supply that evidence.

What to watch next: whether the government trials produce published findings, and whether Teo's review of high-risk AI safeguards leads to concrete regulatory changes.
