Singapore is looking into building undersea tunnels that would link the island of Pulau Tekong to the mainland, according to a report by The Straits Times. The feasibility study was announced as part of the country’s National Day Rally (NDR) 2026, the newspaper said.

The Straits Times reports that the proposal is still in the early study phase, with no timeline or cost estimates disclosed. Pulau Tekong currently serves as a restricted military training area, and improved connectivity could support future development or operational needs.

The tunnel project is one of several infrastructure ideas raised during the NDR 2026 address. In a related announcement covered by The Straits Times and other outlets, Singapore plans to merge several outer islands—including Semakau, Bukom, and Pulau Sudong—to form a new western island. The Online Citizen also noted this consolidation effort, which appears aimed at creating more land for industrial or residential use.

Separately, Yahoo News Singapore reported that Sentosa’s west coast would receive better access, and a new resort called Downtown South is planned for Pulau Brani. These moves suggest a broader push to reorganise and develop Singapore’s southern islands, with the Tekong tunnel potentially serving as a key link in that network.

The undersea tunnel study is still at an early stage, and observers will be watching for further details on the scope, engineering challenges, and potential timeline in the coming months.
