Shamrock Rovers were on course to be crowned League of Ireland Premier Division champions on Friday night, according to The Irish Times, after moving into a commanding 4-0 lead at home to Sligo Rovers in Tallaght.

Adam Brennan scored twice for the Hoops, with the Irish Independent reporting his quick-fire brace put the hosts in control. Further goals from Greene and Watts extended the advantage, and The Irish Times described the mood in Tallaght as party time as the match moved into stoppage time.

The result, as it stood, would be enough to deliver the title. The Irish Examiner reported that Rovers were hoping a slip-up by Bohemians could hand them a sixth Premier Division crown in seven years.

Why it matters

The destination of the league title rested on two matches played at the same time. While Rovers were building their lead in Tallaght, Bohemians were hosting Shelbourne in a game that carried just as much weight for the championship race.

According to The Irish Times, Shelbourne took an 85th-minute lead through Mipo Odubeko, who finished high past the goalkeeper from just outside the six-yard box after a low cross from Norris. That goal left Bohs, in the outlet's words, looking done — and left Rovers firmly in control of their own fate.

Shelbourne's night at Dalymount

The Irish Times live coverage painted a picture of a tense, scrappy contest at Dalymount Park. Shelbourne were the better side early on, with Henry-Francis threatening and Bohs looking nervy. By the 28th minute the game was still goalless, and the outlet noted that Sligo and Shamrock Rovers were also level at that stage.

Bohemians improved after the break. The Irish Times reported that they looked more menacing in attack following half-time, with Parsons, Myers and Vaughan causing problems, and Casey produced a fine block from a Vaughan shot. Earlier, in the 41st minute, Myers had hit the post after a cross was knocked back across goal by James-Taylor.

Shelbourne had chances of their own. Martin headed a cross towards goal in the 18th minute without truly troubling the keeper, and Moore lifted an effort over from inside the box in the 43rd. After the interval, McInroy had a shot saved by Walters and later scuffed another attempt as the game grew ragged, with mistakes creeping in on both sides.

Bohs were also forced into an early change, with Ross Tierney replaced by Zane Myers in the 34th minute — a difficult blow given the injuries already affecting the squad, according to The Irish Times.

The outlet also noted that items were being thrown onto the pitch, leaving scorch marks on a surface that had been looking well, and that Shelbourne supporters set off flares again after the goal, with one landing on the field.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division

There was significant movement at both ends of the table on Friday night.

Waterford twice led Drogheda United. Leo Burney put Drogheda ahead in the 23rd minute — an important goal in the fight to avoid the relegation playoff, per The Irish Times — before Noonan struck to restore Waterford's advantage at 2-1, a scoreline the outlet said could save them from the playoff.

Derry City, meanwhile, moved into fourth position as it stood. James Clarke opened the scoring in the 9th minute, a goal that would have put Derry above Shelbourne in the table at that point, and Michael Duffy added a second as Derry led Dundalk 2-0.

All of those scorelines remained subject to change as the night wore on, with the title picture in particular hinging on events in Tallaght and at Dalymount.

What to watch: confirmation of the final scores and the league table, which will determine whether Rovers' sixth crown in seven seasons is officially sealed.
