Scottland FC have dismissed head coach Norman Mapeza with immediate effect after the club was knocked out of the CAF Champions League, according to reports carried by allAfrica.com and other Zimbabwean outlets.

The decision followed Scottland's 3-0 loss to Angolan side Petro de Luanda in Luanda on Friday, a result that eliminated the Zimbabwean champions 3-2 on aggregate in the second preliminary round despite a 2-0 win in the first leg.

The Harare-based club, which plays in Mabvuku, was competing in Africa's top club competition for the first time and had hoped to make an impression in its debut campaign.

Why it matters

The sacking underlines how quickly expectations have risen at Scottland, a club that won the Zimbabwean title and then invested in experienced players to compete on the continent. Mapeza was appointed in November 2025 after leaving FC Platinum, with a brief to deliver domestic success and turn the side into a credible continental competitor.

That project has now lost its figurehead less than a week after the club's first Champions League run ended. The early exit also removes a significant source of revenue and exposure that comes with progress in the competition, and it leaves the defending league champions searching for a new coach while they are still contesting the domestic title.

How the tie slipped away

Scottland travelled to Angola with a comfortable cushion. Second-half goals from Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona had given them a 2-0 advantage from the home leg, and the return fixture appeared to be theirs to manage.

Petro de Luanda had other plans. Ruben Aderito, Jorge Perreira and Pedro Aparicio scored for the Angolan side, with Aparicio's goal arriving in the 85th minute to complete the turnaround.

Two of the three goals came from corner kicks, a defensive failing that Mapeza acknowledged in his post-match comments.

"We failed to defend those set-pieces. They got two goals from corner kicks. We could have done better," he said, pointing to problems with organisation and communication among his defenders.

The defeat was reported by Zimbabwean outlets including The Herald, NewsDay's sister publication DailyNews, ZimLive and NewZimbabwe.com, as well as by the pan-African aggregator allAfrica.com.

Domestic pressure adds to the picture

The Champions League exit was not the only difficulty facing Mapeza. Scottland are defending their league title and have been pushed by Hardrock FC in the race for the championship, adding to the pressure on the coaching staff.

According to the reports, the club has not yet issued a detailed official statement explaining the reasoning behind the dismissal or naming a replacement. That silence leaves open questions about whether the decision was driven solely by the continental exit or by the wider domestic picture.

Mapeza's record at the club included the league title that earned Scottland their place in the Champions League, and his departure comes barely a year after he took charge.

What to watch

Attention now turns to who Scottland appoint and how quickly the squad responds, with the domestic title race still live and the club's continental ambitions on hold until next season.
