Chinese scientists have floated the idea of using robot dogs as security patrols at a future lunar research station, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.

The proposal, published on Saturday, suggests that quadruped robots could be deployed to guard the Moon base, a facility China has said it intends to build in the coming decades. The concept was outlined by researchers involved in planning for the station, the outlet reported.

The idea builds on China’s broader push to establish a permanent presence on the lunar surface. The country has already landed robotic rovers on the Moon and has been developing technologies for long-duration stays, including life support systems and habitat designs. A crewed research station would require more than just infrastructure, however, and security is emerging as a practical concern.

Robot watchdogs would offer several advantages over human guards, the scientists argue. They could operate continuously without rest, withstand the Moon’s harsh environment, and respond quickly to anomalies such as equipment malfunctions or unexpected debris impacts. The robots would also reduce the workload on astronauts, who would otherwise need to conduct routine inspections themselves.

The proposal remains at an early stage, and no timeline has been given for when such robots might be built or tested. The South China Morning Post notes that the idea is part of a wider set of studies examining how to support a permanent lunar outpost.

What to watch next: whether China’s space agency incorporates robotic patrols into its official lunar station plans, and how the technology performs in upcoming ground-based trials.
