Sanlam has announced plans to acquire full ownership of Santam, the insurance group valued at R44 billion, according to businesstech.co.za. The move would see Sanlam buy out the remaining shareholders of Santam and remove the company from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

The proposal is a cash bid, news24.com reports, meaning shareholders would be paid in money rather than shares. Moneyweb describes the transaction as a buy-out and delisting deal for Santam.

Coverage of the announcement framed it as a significant step for Sanlam. Business Day characterised the plan as a show of strength by the company, which already holds a stake in Santam and now intends to bring the insurer fully under its control.

Santam has operated as a separately listed entity, and the buy-out would end that arrangement by consolidating it into Sanlam's operations. The reports did not disclose the price per share or the total value of the offer beyond the R44 billion figure attached to Santam.

What to watch next: whether Santam shareholders accept the cash terms and how regulators respond to the proposed delisting.
