Russia’s manufacturing sector expanded at a slightly faster pace in July, according to data reported by Russian financial news outlets. The Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for manufacturing rose to 50.7 points in July, up from 50.3 points in June, as reported by Interfax and other sources.

A reading above 50 indicates expansion in the sector, while a figure below that threshold points to contraction. The July figure marks the highest level of production activity in 18 months, according to The Moscow Times. The data was compiled and released by S&P Global, which produces the PMI survey for Russia.

The increase in the headline index was driven by stronger output and new orders, according to reports from Finam and other outlets. However, the positive headline masks a more cautious outlook among business leaders. Business confidence fell to its lowest level in six years, as companies expressed uncertainty about future demand prospects, according to Smart-Lab.

The mixed signals suggest that while current production conditions have improved, manufacturers remain wary about sustaining growth. The decline in business sentiment points to concerns over order volumes and overall economic stability in the coming months.

The Russian manufacturing sector has faced significant headwinds over the past year, including sanctions and shifting domestic demand. The modest uptick in July offers some relief, but the weak confidence reading indicates that firms are not yet convinced the recovery is durable.

Observers will be watching the August PMI release to see whether the expansion holds and whether business sentiment begins to recover from its multi-year low.
