Rosenborg has sent a formal report to the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) after forward Amin Chiakha said a Fredrikstad player directed a racial slur at him during Saturday's Eliteserien match at Fredrikstad Stadion, according to Nettavisen. The alleged remark came roughly an hour into the game. Fredrikstad has publicly backed its player, who denies saying the word.

In a press release quoted by Nettavisen, Rosenborg said it "takes a strong stance against all forms of racism" and supports Chiakha fully, adding that it has asked the federation to examine the matter thoroughly.

Why it matters

The case puts Norwegian football's disciplinary system under scrutiny at a time when leagues across Europe are under pressure to show that reports of discrimination lead to real consequences. It also sets two clubs against each other in public: one standing behind an accuser, the other behind the player he accuses. Because the two accounts cannot both be true, the outcome will likely rest on what the NFF's disciplinary committee can establish, not on statements from either club.

Chiakha, who has parents from Algeria and plays for Algeria's national team, is the player making the allegation. Fredrikstad's response came the same evening.

What was allegedly said

Tore Berdal, Fredrikstad's day-to-day manager, confirmed to TV 2 that the word at the centre of the dispute was "perker," a derogatory term used in Norway about people of Arab or Middle Eastern background. Nettavisen reports that confirmation.

Fredrikstad issued a statement on Saturday night defending its player. Football director Joachim Heier said the club had spoken with him and that he was "sad and disappointed" about the accusation. According to Heier, the player feels accused of using a word he does not know and insists he never said it. Heier added that the club has complete confidence in the player and that, as the club knows him, the claim is hard to understand.

The statement also said Fredrikstad views such an accusation very seriously and that racism has no place in football or in society more broadly.

Disciplinary committee meets Tuesday

Tonje Rismo, who chairs the NFF's disciplinary committee, told Nettavisen that the committee meets on Tuesday. She said cases are sent to the committee on the day of the meeting, so she did not know which matters would be on the agenda.

That means the timing of any review is not yet public. Rosenborg's report has been filed, but whether the case reaches Tuesday's meeting — and what the committee decides to do with it — remains open.

The match itself was between two top-flight sides, and the allegation has drawn coverage from several Norwegian outlets, including Dagbladet, VG and adressa.no, alongside Nettavisen's reporting.

What to watch: whether the NFF's disciplinary committee takes up the case at its Tuesday meeting, and what Fredrikstad and Rosenborg say once the federation responds.
